ABOUT John Higgs
I’m an Englishman who became an American. I think that living the American experience is one of the best things that ever happened to me. Over and above being an honest citizen and paying my taxes, I wanted to give back something to a country that has given me so much. I’ve always enjoyed writing, and over the years I wrote a couple of short books for a publisher: one on dealing with home invasions, and the other on escaping from disasters. In 2010, I wrote and published a book that teaches the reader to develop the mindset or attitude to be aware of their surroundings, identify potential problems in advance, and have a simple plan to deal with, or to avoid those problems. In 1990 I became a certified firearms instructor, and since then I’ve taught people (mostly as a volunteer) to be safe with firearms and how to use them responsibly to protect themselves and their families. My book is called, “Dealing with Danger – be Prepared, Aware, and Decisive” and I deliberately put the problem and the answer right there in the title.
WHY a JUNKYARD DOG?
Junkyard Dog is a metaphor for how we should behave to improve our own safety and security. Think of an actual junkyard. It’s a place someone uses to buy and sell old cars, appliances and other stuff. It has value to the owner, so he puts a wire fence around it, and at night he locks the gate and puts a guard dog inside the fence. The dog guards the junkyard. The dog is smart. He understands three basic rules and lives by them:
The Junkyard Dog is vigilant
The Junkyard Dog will deal with any threat inside the junkyard
The Junkyard Dog will not pursue the threat outside of the junkyard
If we adopt the same rules, we can improve our chances of surviving or preferably avoiding the bad stuff.
